New Delhi: On Tuesday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi refused to become Lok Sabha leader of the party, leading to five-time MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury being selected for the post.

Despite the reiteration of his party that he should remain as president of the party, Gandhi also continued to stick to his position that he wanted to step down.

The events of the day unfolded when a strategy group comprising leader of Congress parliamentary party Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, P Chidambaram, Ahmed Patel and Jairam Ramesh met at 10 Janpath in the morning, where Chowdhury and Kodikunnel Suresh, six-time Kerala MP, were also present.

Sonia provided Rahul the post of party leader in the Lok Sabha, according to a party insider, but he declined to say it should be provided to a senior MP. The General Secretary of Congress Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached 10 Janpath after the conference and held a conference with Rahul and Sonia.

The name of Chowdhury went up only after the end of the second session.

The leadership crisis of Congress, which is in its fourth week, started after Gandhi offered to resign as party leader and asked the working committee to pick a fresh president after the rout of Lok Sabha. Senior Congress representatives met last Wednesday in the absence of all three members of the Gandhi family under the management of AK Antony.

Randeep Surjewala, chief spokesman for Congress, said after the conference that Gandhi will stay the leader of Congress.

Gandhi repeated his stand after returning from a foreign journey on Monday morning. According to the party insider, some senior officials also held casual conversations with him to ask him to proceed as party leader. But he declined to give in.
